Sean: The University of Pennsylvania is located in the University City neighborhood of Philadelphia, a vibrant part of downtown Philly also home to Drexel University and the University of the Sciences. While the area surrounding campus is urban, the campus itself is beautiful, safe, and quiet and offers a respite from city life. The public transportation options include a subway and an extensive bus system. It can be useful to have a bike to get around; having a car is a luxury and not necessary. How vailable are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Sean:My professors, teaching assistants, and academic advisers were all accessible and willing to meet with students to discuss class matters. The professors and TAs held regular office hours. Students could meet with academic advisors by setting appointments or just dropping in. How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Sean:UPenn offers a variety of dorm options to meet different students needs. The quad is the largest dorm complex, housing thousands of undergraduates and embodying the typical college living experience. The high rises, where I spent my first two years, are three 24-story apartment buildings with private bedrooms and in-suite kitchens and baths. Dining halls are located either within the dorm or a short walk away and offer great food at reasonable prices. There are plenty of opportunities for students to socialize, whether it be just hanging out in one of the dorm's recreation rooms or group outings organized by resident advisors. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Sean:UPenn offers a wide variety of top undergraduate programs, including business, engineering, communications, nursing, and liberal arts. I double majored in economics and psychology, due to an intrinsic curiosity in the two subjects. I also took advantage of the opportunity to take classes in a wide array of disciplines, from chemistry to gender studies. The university offered support for any student expressing an interest. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Sean:I found it relatively easy to meet people and make friends as a freshman. The first week of school was marked by several events organized by either the school or the dorm for students to gather and socialize with one another. Many of the students I met that first week I remained friends with throughout my time at UPenn. Greek life also offered plenty of opportunities to meet friends. There are over 50 fraternities and sororities at UPenn, and more than 25 percent of students decide to join one of these organizations. How helpful are the Career Centerand other student support services? Sean:There are a multitude of support services for student development available to all those who wish to take advantage of them. This includes career support services. As an Ivy League institution attracting the best and the brightest, many reputable companies come to campus for recruiting. How are the various study areas, such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Sean:There are many readily-available study areas, ranging from quiet cafes to the vast expanses of the various campus libraries. Personally, I spent a lot of time in the private study rooms in the Wharton Schools Huntsman building. These rooms, which students can book online, are equipped with a computer and smartboard. Describe the surrounding town. Sean:UPenn is located in downtown Philadelphia. The city offers a multitude of entertainment options, including museums (the Mutter Museum of medical oddities is a must-visit), historical sites, the vibrant South Street corridor, professional sports, and everything else you would expect in a major city. Its quite common for students to venture into the surrounding neighborhoods to explore everything Philadelphia has to offer. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Sean:There are around 10,000 undergraduate students at UPenn. Classes range in size from large lectures with over a hundred students to small classes with five or 10 students. I never had any issues with the class sizes. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Sean:My most memorable experience was the over two years I spent with my mentor Dr. Steven Sayers. I took a small psychology seminar with Dr. Sayers and was lucky enough to be offered a research assistant position with him studying psychology and medical treatment adherence at the nearby Philadelphia veterans hospital. There, Dr. Sayers went out of his way to teach me the intricacies of research design, data gathering, statistical analysis, and manuscript preparation. How to Avoid Study Distractions This is certainly a broad topic, as distractions are everywhere. Not only that, but everybody gets distracted by different things. That is one of the reasons studying can be so difficult and frustrating random aspects of the world are always catching our attention. Especially if you are one with a shorter attention span, staying focused through your studies is no easy process. Here are some great approaches to studying in collegethat you may want to check out as well. Regardless of where we study, the surrounding environment is going to detract us from our work in one way or another. But there are a few distractions that we can control, and they are obvious ones. Ways of shutting them off are simple and effective however, gathering up the discipline to go through with these processes may be difficult. Some of it involves breaking away from things we are addicted to and/or dependent on, and some of it involves preventing procrastination habits. When it comes to both areas, it may be tough yet, in the end, this method could truly turn your study sessions around in a wholly positive way. If you dont need the internet, disconnect it: The internet is probably the number one distraction for most people, so this should be easy to recognize. Whether or not its easy to do, however, is a different story. We all like to say that we wont get on Facebook, we wont check Twitter, we wont check on our favorite YouTube channel, etc. But lets face it: were only human, and checking on these things is usually inevitable. In your mind, you may even preface it with Im just going to look once and then get right back to my work, but it typically ends up lasting longer than one look, right? Therefore, the safest method here would be to either disconnect your internet temporarily at home, or go somewhere without free wi-fi. The latter may be safer, since you could easily reconnect your internet at home. It may be painful, but itll allow you to study much more efficiently. Dont worry, youll survive. Silence your cell phone and put it away: This is pretty similar to the internet disconnection. With your phone by your side, your eyes and hands usually cant help but gravitate toward it. When it goes off, your thoughts will be taken elsewhere, for who knows how long? If you put it away and silence it, the distraction simply wont be there. Of course, we all know this is about as easy as getting away from the internet but its just something youll have to do. Sometimes, turning the phone off altogether may work better than simply silencing it, because that makes it a lot harder to check your messages. You can adjust these rules accordingly to your personal level of dependency. Stay away from T.V.s: This should be pretty self-explanatory. Although you may view the local news or a funny reality show as some needed background noise, it is usually going to end up being more than that. Once any bit of dialogue steals your attention, your mind will get drawn into the program usually unintentionally. Even if your attention is only taken for a couple of minutes at a time, those minutes amount to a lot by the end of your session. It would be pretty frustrating knowing your studying lasted an hour longer than it needed to only because that screen caught your eye every ten minutes. Sometimes you dont even realize how often those T.V. icons are distracting you. Dont carry headphones with you: Some people really work well with a little background music, and thats okay. But if having the music on for background noise is for the same reason you had the T.V. on for background noise, think twice before you load up your songs. Be honest with yourself and figure out if music takes away your study focus. If it does, take your work outside your home and do not bring headphones. Clearly, you cant outwardly play your music in a library or study lounge for everyone else to hear, so a lack of headphones leaves you stuck. However, that initial frustration will be pushed aside for consistently attentive studying. Youd be amazed at how much quicker you can get through material without song lyrics swimming through your head. Stock up all necessary supplies by your side: If your pen runs out of ink, you have to get up and get a new one. If you get thirsty, youll need to go get a bottle of water. If youre cold, you will be forced to go search for a sweater. We may secretly like when these events occur because they give us reasons to get away from our study area, even if just for a minute. But that minute easily turns into more minutes, because once youre off, its hard to get back to business. If you anticipate all of these possible mishaps and keep necessary items near you, however, you will have no reason to leave your study space until you are finished. As a result, some experts in the field are steering away from the term altogether. But I like the term. I think it’s filled with meaning and can see why Tom Peters (business guru) coined the term a decade ago. What Is Branding? To get you clear, let’s first look at this from a purely marketing point of view, since that’s where this term came from. Wiki defines branding as: “Name, term, design, symbol, or any other feature that identifies one sellers goods or service as distinct from those of other sellers.”People engaged in branding seek to develop or align the expectations behind their brand experience, creating the impression that a brand associated with a product or service has certain qualities or characteristics that make it special or unique. In other words, when you see a McDonald s and eat at a McDonalds, you think of certain visual images, as well as a consistent eating experience and environment. You’re very clear this isn’t going to be a fine dining experience; you know what to expect. That’s what branding does for the buyer. It helps them know where to go to have a specific product or service and experience. How Do You Make Branding Personal? To translate that for your usage, personal branding is what identifies you from another person and what other people can expect when “experiencing” or being with you. In the work context, it’s your work reputation and what people come to value about you. Your personal brand is unique to you. There’s no one else out there with the same constellation of skills and personal behaviors you have. Granted, there may be others with greater expertise than you, but we aren’t talking about a comparison when it comes to personal branding; we’re talking about only you and how you are viewed by others. For example, let’s look at Oprah’s personal brand. Visually, Oprah wears color and smiles. You see pictures of her touching and making contact with people. In her work, her focus is on being curious about the world, supporting the best in others and personal development. You could say many other things about what we expect out of her and how we experience her. All of that is consistent and clear to those of us watching her. We’d all be shocked if she suddenly got cranky and negative. To summarize your personal brand: It’s unique to you. It’s your reputation. It’s how others experience you and what they value about you. It’s what others expect and seek you out for. It’s also what YOU want to be known for. Why Does Personal Branding Matter? With those things in mind, now the big question is: Why is awareness of your personal brand important to your career? Here are 3 very good reasons: 1. If you’re aware of your personal brand and it’s consistent with your career goals, you want to reinforce it so people very clearly understand what you’re all about. Lena: Boston University is located in the heart of Boston. Fenway Park, the Charles River, and Kenmore Square are a short walking distance away. I would describe the campus as very safe with many resources that provide around-the-clock protection for students. The university has its own shuttle bus system; however, the iconic T Train is a very reliable transportation source. Cars are entirely unnecessary as the T, and readily accessible cabs, will take you anywhere you need to go. Many students bike from place to place as well. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Lena: Classes can be quite large at Boston University, and this can be intimidating. However, professors and TAs are very helpful. Academic advisors are always available and willing to discuss your academic career during and after your time at the university. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Lena: Boston University has many dining halls throughout the campus. Each one is unique and equally delicious. Boston University also has a variety of living situations, ranging from dorms to apartments. Living in the Boston University dorms really did spoil me a bit. The John Hancock Student Village is honestly the best dorm living I have ever experienced. Everything is new and up to date, and the maintenance staff is very responsive to any problems there may be. The security at each dorm is another plus when living in the city. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Lena: I studied Biology at Boston University. Other popular and well-known colleges at the university include the School of Management and the School of Communications. Each college was very well represented and supported. The university also provided multiple study abroad opportunities crafted for each area of study. I personally studied abroad in Ecuador with the Tropical Ecology Program. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Lena: Although freshmen dorms are not the nicest of the dorms at Boston University, the experience is truly extraordinary. The bonds made during those first semesters are strong. If that is not enough, there are hundreds of different university groups and activities where you can meet people. I was also a member of TriDelta while I attended Boston University. If you decide to join in on Greek life, it is very prominent. However, I never felt that you would have to be a part of Greek life to be social. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Lena: There are many recruiting events and networking events sponsored by the university. Also, Boston is home to a large amount of colleges and universities that open their recruiting events to everyone. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Lena: There is one major library called Mugar. It is very large and I never had a problem finding space. Each university building has multiple study areas that are accessible to everyone. The George Sherman Union is a large area that includes many spaces to sit and socialize, or to study, and includes a few options for food. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Lena: As I said before, Boston University is in the heart of Boston. There is always something to do. Whether it is sponsored by the university, or entirely unrelated to anything in school, there is never a dull night. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Lena: The student body is very large. This can seem intimidating. I battled with the decision of attending a smaller school. I ended up choosing Boston University because of the amazing opportunities the university applies to its students. I learned to love the large student body and could not have seen my undergraduate experience any other way. The average class size when I first attended was 19. However, it really depends on what you are studying. Most introductory classes are quite large. My Introductory Biology class consisted of about 200 students. As you increase in specificity or difficulty, the class size decreases. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Lena: I have to say my first memorable experience at Boston University occurred before I was an official student. I attended the Accepted Students Day and was being shown a presentation on the study abroad experiences at Boston University. As a small town girl, realizing I could live in some of the most remote places in the world and call it school was incredible. Creating video tutorials, uploading them to YouTube and embedding them on your blog will give you an opportunity to practice your English speaking skills online. 2. Become an expert that people know and trust. When people have a question about something, they usually go to the internet to do a search. If you use the keywords they use in their search in your blog post, their search engine will include you in the search results. Once people begin to find you and read your blog, it will help to establish you as an expert in your field of study. People will come to recognize that you are a valuable source of information. You can’t become a valuable source of information unless you have information to share. This means developing your expertise by exploring recent research and technological innovations in your field and presenting it in a way that people will appreciate. Search engines and Wikipedia will help you track down new research that expands or refines our understanding of topics related to your field. Following up on new products released by leading companies in your field is another great way to develop your expertise and communication skills in your field. As you learn more about your field and explain it to people in a way that people appreciate, they will begin to recognize you as an expert that they can trust. 3. Make money. When it comes time to search for a job or start a business, your blog will show prospective employers and customers what you know and what you can do for them. When people know you, trust you, and like you, they are more likely to buy from you. Affiliate links, ads and online stores will then become significant sources of income that can make money for you while you sleep. Think about it. If people read your articles and watch your video tutorials, they will come to respect you. Since the information you provide is free, they will certainly appreciate what you have done for them. That sets up the norm of reciprocity. You have done something nice for them and they will want to do something nice for you. When you recommend a product and provide a link, they may take the extra few seconds to find out about that product. If they are curious, they are more likely to indulge that curiosity by clicking on ads in your blog post. If they are ready to buy, they will prefer to buy from you than a stranger, and pow! You have made ad-revenue, or a commission on a sale, or sold your services. That’s digital marketing in a nutshell. It takes time, but it works. 4. Join a virtual community that spans the globe. Perhaps money is not your thing. People who obsess about money are boring anyway. Interesting people know stuff, make stuff and connect with other interesting people who know stuff, make stuff and connect with interesting people. You will find that your blog will bring you into contact with faraway people who share your interests and have skills that complement your own. You will see that there are people who are more skilled and knowledgeable than you and and others who can learn and benefit from knowing you. Eventually, you will discover that you are in the center of a worldwide network of nerdy-cool people. Bloggers belong to a community that stretches beyond their family and gang of neighbourhood friends, a virtual community that stretches over the internet and out into the wider world. While your buddies are talking hockey or politics or fashion, you will look up to see an airplane flying overhead and realize, “Hey, I know a guy in Kuala Lumpur. If I got on a plane, I could go there and shake his hand. Cool.” 5. Develop your digital literacy skills. When you blog, you use the internet on a deeper level than most young people do. Most college students go on Facebook to flirt or joke around. They use only the buttons and tools that Facebook provides them. With a blog, you can switch from “Compose” mode to “HTML” mode and gain insight into how websites are made. As you gain confidence, you will want to embed media, links and buttons that add interactivity to your blog post. By switching to HTML mode, you see elements of the code that you can tweak and fiddle with. That is the beginning of web programming, a first step into a technology that is transforming the world before our eyes. You may start to wonder about Javascript, PHP MySQL, and Linux. Blogs will open you eyes to how the internet works, and you will go from being a consumer of digital content to a producer. Your blog will teach you how to read and write code. It will make you powerful. Even if you never switch to HTML mode, blogging will introduce you to concepts of hyperlinking, labels, URLS, alt tags, keywords and search engine optimization. These are important elements of a successful blog because of their influence on the way search engines find you and send traffic to your blog.
